Ethical Issues in Decision-Making in Public Health

Fall semester

This course will explore ethical issues related to research and/or public policy intended for public health and well-being in the domestic and international communities. The assignments in the course are directed toward building a foundation of ethical principles. Lecture presentations will include discussion of ethical principles on informed consent, confidentiality and privacy; equitable distribution of resources (justice); standards of care and harm and benefit; research design; ethical challenges in a cholera epidemic; cancer screening, ethical issues, and treatment; HPV vaccination; Health Care Reform and oral health; ethical and political issues around midlevel providers in dental care; tobacco use, PAAN, and oral cancer; and HIV therapy for prevention versus treatment.
